If it is on stock allowance, it may disappear before the final operation.
A scribe mark also relies on a stable relationship between the marked surface and the feature being referenced. If the surface is subsequently machined, the original witness no longer represents the same geometry. Re-indexing takes operator time
When orientation has been lost, the usual recovery method is to clock from a feature, indicate the part, use a probe, or make a trial cut and inspect the result. These are valid methods, but they consume machine time and require judgement. On a one-off component, that may be acceptable. Across repeated batches or multiple secondary operations, the time spent finding the original rotational position can exceed the time saved by avoiding a dedicated reference tool.
When a Scribe Mark Is the Right Choice
Scribe marks still have a place in a working shop. They are practical for roughing operations, temporary assembly references and jobs where the mark is only there to prevent an obvious 180-degree error. They can also be suitable where the work will remain in one setup, where orientation is non-critical, or where the marked area will be machined away before completion.
They are particularly useful when the reference does not need to be precise. Marking a flange and a mating component before dismantling, identifying a preferred jaw position, or recording the relationship between a rough casting and a fixture are sensible uses. The mark gives the operator information without adding process complexity.
